Google Analytics 4 gives you hundreds of reports, and it is easy to drown in numbers that look impressive but do not change any decision. The goal of analytics is simple: understand what brings customers and do more of it.
Start with business questions
Before opening a report, write down the questions that matter:
- Which channels bring the leads or sales that I actually want?
- Where do visitors drop off before converting?
- Which pages and campaigns deserve more investment?
The metrics worth tracking
- Conversions (key events). Form submissions, calls, messages, sign-ups and purchases. These are the heart of your reporting.
- Conversion rate by channel. Which sources turn visitors into customers, not just visitors.
- Cost per conversion. Connect ad spend to results to see real efficiency.
- Revenue and average order value for e-commerce.
- Engaged sessions and engagement time to see whether your content holds attention.
- Landing page performance. Which entry pages convert and which ones leak.
Metrics that often mislead
- Total traffic on its own. More visitors mean little if none convert.
- Page views. Easy to inflate, hard to act on.
- Bounce-style numbers without context. A quick answer can be a successful visit.
Set up tracking correctly
Reliable decisions require reliable data. Make sure that:
- Key events are defined and tested.
- Campaigns use consistent tracking parameters.
- Internal traffic and duplicate events are filtered.
- Consent and privacy rules are respected for each market, including the requirements that apply in Europe.
Build one simple dashboard
A short dashboard that shows conversions, cost per conversion and top channels is more useful than fifty charts. Review it on a fixed rhythm and write down the action each review leads to.
Turn data into action
Numbers matter only when they change what you do: move budget, fix a page, test a message. If a report never changes a decision, remove it.
